1969 — they put a man on the moon

It's hard to believe that 56 years after they put a man on the moon, there's still no cure for the common cold. But what an accomplishment that was. Someone who was 80 years old in 1969 literally grew up in the age of the horse-and-buggy and lived to see a man step foot on the moon. Unreal (literally, to some flat-earthers out there!)


Has there ever been a more amazing technological transformation in anyone's lifetime? An 80-year-old today grew up with black-and-white TV and now can watch television in high definition. Somehow that pales in comparison.


The moon landing dominated the pre-internet news like few events have. Here's a look at the Sun-Times and Tribune on July 21, 1969, with coverage of that historic event:

The Cubs were in the midst of a glorious season and were 61-37 after sweeping the Phillies at old Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia. The worst was yet to come, but that's another story for another day.
